Even if this course appears antiquated, I still give Dean a thumbs up for his creative style and teaching ability. Terry Dean is a marketer we can really learn a lot from, especially if he would ever updated his material!



Seeing as how it is now 2009 and Terry Dean is still promoting "Net Breakthroughs" you can understand when I say that even though some of the stuff that he covers is good it is still outdated and there are more up to date programs available.

Each year, thousands of companies consistently raise prices to increase margins and offset growth in various costs. For anyone working in corporate America, you are quite familiar with this tactic. For marketers, rising costs are always a challenge.



Price increases can negatively impact the sales and marketing efforts for today's busy marketing professional. A price increase on products or services that haven't changed creates a difficult scenario for current customers familiar with a lower cost. This is especially true when we hear objections from our customers expressing their dissatisfaction. With few or literally no changes to a given product overcoming objections is difficult.



A key concern among marketing professionals is that customers will quickly move to a competitors product as soon as they hear the words price increase. This is especially true in markets where your competitor has a similarly priced product. There is always someone else that your customer can buy from. The good news however is that few customers migrate because of price increases.



There are a number of reasons why customers do not jump ship so quickly. The bottom line is that switch has costs associated with it. These costs are both and emotional as well as financial.



Consumers have been conditioned to ask for a discount or find the sales rack. When introducing a price increase to your customers they are going to want to avoid it at all costs. This is just human nature. But this also explains why they will continue to ask for discounts long after their customers even though they wont leave you.



Below I list just a few things to consider before communicating a price increase to customers. Do what you can to lighten the load or simply divert attention to something of greater value.



Add value that is greater than or equal to your price increase. Customers do not want to pay more for the same old thing. When they do, their perception of value diminishes. Provide additional services, support, or terms to deliver additional value that is substantiated by price.



Evaluate the cost for your customer to switch. This consideration has always been popular among phone companies. They not only want to sell more to existing customers, but they also want to attract new ones. You must be able to explain to your customer what costs he will incur if he changes providers. These costs may be both financial as well as emotional. How much time, energy, and resources will it take to truly switch?



Do not treat all customers equally. I know it is taboo today to say such a thing but not all customers are equal. Some have been with you a long time. Others are working with you for the first time. Your price increases should reflect the individuality of your customers and the impact you wish to have. Consider treating customers differently.



The last piece of advice I can give anyone thinking about delivering price increases is to fully understand the competition and what types of alternatives are available to those you currently serve.



If your company offers a better package at an equal or more favorable price, the notion of losing droves of customers over a single price increase really is not an issue. If your offering is less valuable however then investments may need to be made to enhance the product or simply revisit pricing.

And what will probably happen is that all the programs you promote will have mediocre results. Really, it is best to focus on one program at a time, get that one going well, and then move on to another.



The technique is to do it slowly but surely. There is really no need to rush into things, especially with affiliate marketing. With the way things are going, the future is looking real bright and it seems affiliate marketing will be staying for a long time too.



Mistake number 3: Not buying the product or using the service.



You really must not fall into this mistake as people will ask you for your opinion of the various products that you are promoting, and you must be able to speak from personal experience.



So make sure that you try out the product yourself before you start to promote it to others, and this way you will be able to speak with confidence about how valuable the product is.



Now these 3 common mistakes that I have listed are mistakes that many a marketer has made, and in some cases it has cost them dearly. If you are aware of them there is every chance that you will be able to avoid them.



So make out a plan of action, and then, as they say, work your plan daily, all the time checking and re-checking that you are staying on target with your efforts.

Without a law of contracts, people would set about transactions with some distrust, and everyone would lose.



Businesses keep track of their transactions and analyze them vigilantly. For example, sales analysis entails evaluating a company's sales transactions by product, customer, territory, and other precise variables.

The next morning I had 3 emails about my car. And later that day call number 2 came in off my syndicated ad. Is this classified ad syndication stuff working? I need to set up times for people to look at my car.



5 days after my post I had 5 calls and 8 emails! To answer my above question, I know classified ad syndication works! It was sooo easy and I only needed to submit my ad once. And it was not brought down from someone flagging it cause they were selling a similar car, etc.

After years of trial and error, I have found that marketing results are relatively consistent when you apply the same techniques. These techniques apply to any industry and any type of campaign you may be running. Consider building your marketing campaign based on the following strategies:



Set targeted goals. Before you get started think about the specific goals you wish to achieve. Many marketers focus on generating some type of conversion but you need to define what conversion means to you. Some individuals are just looking for a sale while others are seeking a lead or download. Before you begin your marketing campaign, identify what action you want respondents to take and how you are going to measure it.



Focus on segmentation. Do not attempt to market to everyone. Choose a specific segment and focus your energies there. If you do, your campaign will be more successful. You can increase your chances of success tremendously when you focus on a specific market or niche. Review your current customer and find others like them if you wish to generate a positive ROI.



Identify key messages points. What are the messages that resonate with your audience? Have you used headlines or email subject lines that have performed extremely well in the past? Statistics say that 5% - 30% of telephone cold callers reach decision makers on the first call. The exact percentage depends on the company size, the decision maker title, availability of direct dial numbers and a myriad of other factors.



If there were a secret for the other 95% - 70% of calls, everyone would want a job as a cold caller!



In fact, telephone cold calling is a repetitive, time-consuming task that can generate incredible results. Most cold callers do not reach decision makers, and most cold calls do not end up in sales. Predicting the ones that reach decision makers and end up as sales is next to impossible.



The biggest secret to successful cold calling is embracing an assured, positive attitude and using proven successful techniques.



Attitude:



Be confident and conversational. Make every call sound as though it's the only one you will make that day. If you have to, look into a mirror. Smile and stand up!



Don't be afraid of rejection. "No" is the second best answer to "yes." Never accept "no" without asking follow-up questions.



"Maybe" should not be an option!



Plan for and ask lots of open ended questions. Believe in your product or service and have confidence that it will help your prospect.



Don't continue calling if you're in a rut. Take a walk. Take at least a five minute break every hour.



Don't make cold calls for the same product or service for more than three hours at a time.



Sales is one of the hardest and most important jobs - ever! Sales people keep entire companies in business! Cold calling is even harder. If you can cold call, you are special. Believe it!



Techniques:



Befriend the gatekeeper: The gatekeeper's job is to block you from the boss. So, show respect to the gatekeeper. Be nice, no matter what he or she says. Be persistent, even if you call for the eighth time. You will most likely get through one day - when the gatekeeper feels sorry for you for trying so long and patiently.



Have a compelling message the gatekeeper can relate to: Prepare a short message the gatekeeper will understand. Make the message as generic as possible. In all events, ensure the message conveys urgency and a benefit for the business. The gatekeeper will likely pass it onto the boss and either allow a conversation, or you may get a return call.



Incorporate the gatekeeper into your sales process: Convert the gatekeeper the "decision maker." It's his or her role to make the boss' job easier. If you show that your product or service helps the boss, you may never need to speak to the decision maker to set that sales appointment.



January is a great time to begin a regular cold calling schedule. Find a good time every day. Schedule cold calling into your day, and don't allow your own gatekeeper to interrupt you during this time! You will succeed.

Why incentives close sales and cash is trash

Closing the sale is a delicate and at times unpredictable process.
Consumers have varying reasons to reject or accept an offer and often some
incentive is necessary. But what kind of incentive is most effective and
brings the most return for the retailer? A discount? A gift? Free
shipping?

The impact and value of the word "free" shouldn't be overlooked, but
neither should the cost of offering something for free. Especially,
though, retailers should consider what market researchers are calling the
"perceived value differential" or PVD for short.

On the consumer side, it's pretty simple math and the goal is
straightforward: get the absolute most for my hard-earned money. It's far
more complicated for the seller, who must develop a moneymaking strategy
via profits and loss equations or cease to do business at all.

Marketing researcher Dr. Flint McGlaughlin labels the cash discount as the
worst incentive one can offer. That's a general statement, and likely one
not applicable to all situations, but it makes sense on a few levels.
Offering $10 off is a straight cash loss to the retailer, and leaves that
$10 out in the Wild West of commerce. Better incentives would include a
$10 gift card, where a customer might spend more than that amount on a
second purchase at the retailer's store, not another place.

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of promotions is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about promotions.

For online purchases, it doesn't take long for a consumer to weigh a cash
discount against the cost of shipping. It the shipping cost is more than
the discount, then the discount could mean very little. Free shipping, by
the way, has been cited repeatedly as the most sought-after incentive by
customers. It only works for the retailer, though, if shipping costs can
be worked into the overall pricing scheme. It may only cost $4 to ship an
item, or $20.

An important distinction there is the perceived value of shipping the
item. In all likelihood, the consumer is unaware of the actual cost of
shipping without knowing the weight, distance, courier, or bulk shipping
arrangements. But it is possible (even likely) the customer perceives the
cost of shipping is higher than a cash discount offered elsewhere.

Let's be honest about the ease of comparison-shopping online, while we're
at it. The retailer's goal is to bring the total cost of the item down
below what competitors offer. Perhaps your biggest competitor offers the
same product you do at $40, plus $10 shipping. Perhaps that same
competitor inflates shipping costs to make up for a steeper, heavily
promoted discount. If you could bring that total cost somehow to $45, even
if it means $45 price and free shipping, you win.

Another incentive that carries perceived value is a free gift. The
MarketingExperiments.com study looked at offering a half-pound of gourmet
coffee with purchase versus a free steel thermos. There is very little
difference in the cost of the two items ($2 vs. $3), but because the
perceived value of the thermos ($15) is twice that of the coffee ($8), the
PVD of the thermos ($12) brings back a higher return on incentive (ROIc).


We play this game in other economies as well. This very recently-passed
holiday season, recipients of a $25 restaurant gift certificate needn't
know the giver paid only $2 for it during a last-minute online promotion.
The recipient gets perceived (and real) value and gives the giver much
(perhaps disproportionate) thanks.
